About the Authors
Mazen Al-Khatib is an associate professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of South Alabama. He has been teaching numerous courses on computer engineering, advanced networking, wireless communications, and Internet protocol television (IPTV). He has published more than 25 technical articles on wired and wireless networking, and he has spoken at more than 15 conferences during the last six years. Dr. Al-Khatib was recognized by the IEEE Communications Society in 2005 for ten years of continuous contributions, and he has been an active member of Eta Kappa Nu since 2003. Dr. Al-Khatib received his Ph.D. degree in computer engineering with a specialization in wireless asynchronous transfer mode networks (WATM) from the Center for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in spring 1999. He received his Master of Science (M.S.) degree in computer engineering with a specialization in fast computer networks (ATM) from Iowa State University in 1993. Dr. Al-Khatib obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in electrical engineering from United Arab Emirates University in 1991.
Mohammad S. Alam is a professor and chair of the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of South Alabama. His research interests include image processing, pattern recognition, biometric recognition, infrared imaging systems, ultrafast computer architectures and algorithms, digital system design, and smart energy management and control. Dr. Alam is the author and co-author of more than 375 published papers, including 148 articles in reference journals, over 215 conference publications, 12 book chapters, and a reference book of selected papers entitled Optical Pattern Recognition Using Joint Transform Correlation (SPIE Press). He has received numerous excellence awards in research, teaching, and service including the 2005 Outstanding Scholar of the Year award from the USA Alumni Association. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, UK), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of both the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Dr. Alam received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton, Ohio in 1992. He received a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in computer engineering from the Wayne State University, Michigan in 1989, and a Master of Science (M.S.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in electrical engineering both from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1985 and 1983, respectively.
