Change brewing: Falling consumption of traditional full-strength beer is draining revenue

Falling per capita alcohol consumption, increasing competition and changing consumer preferences are influencing beer manufacturers' performance. The COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdown measures also disrupted demand from export markets and hospitality venues, alongside restrictions on brewers' ability to sell through their own brewpubs. Shoppers are increasingly moving from traditional beers to premium and craft beers. Rising demand from downstream liquor retailers is benefiting beer manufacturers. Revenue has declined at a slight annualised 0.1% over the five years through 2022-23, to $5.1 billion. This includes an increase by 3.8% in 2022-23, due to a jump in demand from pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Industry operators manufacture beer, ale, stout or porter. Operators generally package beer in kegs, bottles or cans, and sell it to bars, wholesalers and retailers. The industry does not include production of non-alcoholic beer.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
