Executive Summary

The pacemaker became the first type of microelectronic medical implant in 1958, when the first pacemaker implantation was performed in Sweden. R&D is focused on helping individuals with weak or failing hearts live longer, fuller lives. Other implanted cardiac devices include defibrillators, loop recorders, heart assist devices, and heart replacements.

Since the 1970s, the microelectronic implant industry has significantly advanced, with devices like neurostimulators directly derived from pacemakers. The development of complex sensors-on-a-chip and the shrinking of mechanical components enabled the creation of implanted medicine infusion pumps. Neurostimulators, implantable devices that stimulate neuronal activity, are increasingly being utilized for neurological reasons, including treating urge incontinence and preventing epileptic convulsions, despite their initial purpose of pain relief. Implanted therapeutic devices, including middle ear implants, hearing-like implants for the deaf, medicine infusion pumps, and bone growth stimulators, have been developed, with some markets legalizing eye implants for specific types of blindness. The industry's product cycle often lags behind the state of the art in technology due to the long clinical testing and clearance process for new medical devices.
