Saudi Arabia Desalination Plant Market is expected to grow over the course of the forecast period due to factors such as government initiatives like Saudi Vision 2030, increasing government investments, increasing demand for municipal, agricultural, and industrial uses and rising demand for solar powered desalination.

A desalination plant is a type of industrial facility used to reduce or recover salt concentrations from water supplies that are intended for drinking or industrial use. By removing salt from the source water, any metal that comes into touch with the treated water is less likely to experience salt-induced corrosion. This makes the water fit for human consumption. Additionally, desalination plants primarily employ one or more of the following water treatment procedures that includes mechanical vapour compressions, thermal multistage flash distillation, and reverse osmosis.

Increasing Demand for Solar-Powered Desalination

Along with improved conservation efforts and expanded desalination capability, new approaches to water issues are also being developed. With its breakthroughs in solar-powered desalination facilities, the nation is currently leading the world in transforming the desalination business. Additionally, in 2018 Advanced Water Technology (AWT) based in Saudi Arabia completed the first major solar-powered desalination facility in the world. Furthermore, as of 2018, the Kingdom's solar-powered desalination facilities conserved an estimated 1.5 million barrels of oil daily, minimising the consequences of oil price increases. By utilizing cutting-edge methods and new technologies, enterprises will have the chance to assist Saudi Arabia in resolving its water problems.

Government Initiatives and Privatization

A key goal of Saudi Arabia's National Transformation Plan and Vision 2030 program is to increase the share of desalinated water generated and held by private businesses. In November 2020, for instance, MEWA (the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture) announced the creation of the Water Transmission and Technologies Company (WTTCO), which will oversee and maintain more than 5,200 miles (8,400 km) of water transmission, distribution, and storage systems in support of the Kingdom's water privatisation and restructuring program. Moreover, the government-run organization is also charged with carrying out Vision 2030's objectives of increased productivity, lower waste, decreased operational costs, and more innovation in the water sector. The WTTCO will also look for more than USD 16 billion in private sector investment in crucial storage and water transmission networks.

Increasing Desalination Investments

In the water industry specifically, the Saudi Arabia government wants to raise the proportion of desalinated water production that comes from strategic partners like independent water and power companies. Additionally, the government plans to begin working with the private sector on wastewater treatment. Moreover, the National Water Company (NWC) will play a smaller role as the government seeks to increase its service area. The Government is also considering of privatizing NWC. For instance, the National Water Company (NWC) recently announced investment opportunities worth billions more over the next five years in the service, infrastructure development, and water treatment fields for more than 300 water projects in Makkah, Riyadh, Taif, and Jeddah. This investment totals nearly USD6.7 billion.
