Saudi Arabia is strategically located in the so-called sun belt, and it has extensive desert land and year-round clear skies. The average amount of energy emitted by sunlight falling on Saudi Arabia is 2200 thermal kWh/m2, (one of the highest in the middle east) making it worthwhile to generate clean energy in the country using direct sunlight via PV cells.
Solar Energy Scenario in Saudi Arabia
KSA currently generates a majority of its electricity from oil. To address this, Saudi Vision 2030 already outlines a number of steps and objectives aimed at reducing the amount of oil used for domestic energy generation and increasing the role of renewable energy in the power sector. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to modernize the country and wean it off its reliance on oil (one of the major ambitions under the Vision 2030 plan). One critical component of this strategy is to begin meaningfully utilizing one of the country's most abundant natural resources: solar power. The Kingdom has already committed to having 9.5 GW of installed capacity by 2023.
As part of Saudi vision 2030, the Kingdom launched the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The NREP will lead the development of a new renewable energy technology industry and support its growth by attracting private sector investment and encouraging public-private partnerships.
Saudi Arabia planned to invest approximately USD 109 billion in the installation of approximately 54 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, with nearly 76% of this capacity generated by solar power, taking advantage of the country's abundant solar radiation.
Solar generation technologies have become so affordable that their levelized cost of energy (LCOE) is now competitive with natural gas and far less expensive than unsubsidized petroleum, which currently accounts for a large portion of electricity production in the Kingdom.
The investment in solar energy will provide an excellent opportunity for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to become a leader in the middle east in adoption of renewables and meet its emissions targets under the Paris Climate Accord.
Without any major technological paradigm shifts, Saudi Arabia could generate well over half of its electricity from renewable sources, with solar power accounting for the majority. A clear roadmap, strategic investment, and political support all play important roles in the Kingdom's future solar energy development.
Recent Developments
In Sept 2022, Saudi Arabia announced five new renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 3,300 megawatts. The projects, which include solar and wind energy generation, were launched by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), which is the primary buyer. The total capacity of the solar projects will be 1,500 MW, with the Al Henakiyah project producing 1,100 MW and the Tubarjal project producing 400mw.
