Home Furnishing Stores sell various home furnishing products, including kitchenware, textiles, appliances, fixtures and decorative pieces. Industry revenue fell significantly over most of the past five years despite a steady increase in both disposable income and housing starts. However, because of heightened competition and lockdowns restricting in-store shopping in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, industry revenue has risen only marginally during the period, rising at a CAGR of 0.5% to $62.1 billion over the past five years. Industry revenue took a hit in 2020, dropping 0.5%. While revenue rebounded in 2021, it fell a further 2.9% in 2022 and is expected to fall a further 0.2% in 2023 alone.
Operators in this industry retail a range of home furnishing goods, including curtains, draperies, blinds, shades, kitchenware, outdoor furniture, home and personal care appliances, floor coverings and decorative accessories. Merchandise is purchased from manufacturers and wholesalers and then sold to the public. Retailers that operate primarily as furniture stores, flooring stores or electronic shopping and mail-order houses are not included in this industry.
