Housewares retailers have come up against tough trading conditions. Industry revenue has been growing at an annualised 1.3% over the past five years and is expected to total $2.3 billion in 2023-24, when revenue will drop by an estimated 4.9%. The outbreak of COVID-19 brought with it a wave of lockdowns and stoppages. Residential building construction activity plummeted in 2019-20 owing to a dip in building commencements as the economy slowed. With fewer new homes needing housewares, retailers had to rely largely on the replacement market to post a sale and lockdown periods did just that.

Houseware retailers stock a range of houseware goods including china, glassware, cutlery and kitchenware. Industry firms purchase these products from manufacturers and wholesalers based domestically or offshore. The industry includes all retailers primarily engaged in selling housewares. Department stores, supermarkets and pure-play online retailers are excluded from the industry. This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
