Fashion forward: Growing obesity levels have led to increased industry demand
The Plus Size Clothing Stores industry has grown over the past five years, despite fluctuating consumer sentiment. Rising obesity levels over the period have underpinned industry revenue growth. Approximately 71.3% of Australians 18 and over are estimated to be overweight or obese in 2021-22. This result represents a large potential consumer market for the industry. Industry revenue is anticipated to grow at an annualised 4.8% over the five years through 2021-22, to $1.2 billion. Trading restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected industry revenue during 2019-2020. However, these restrictions have incentivised a faster shift to online retailing, which has increased sales but exposed industry firms to fierce competition. For example, department stores such as Myer have expanded their online presence to retain consumer demand.
Industry retailers specialise in plus size clothing, which is clothing proportioned specifically for larger men and women. The industry excludes all online-only players and clothing retailers that do not primarily sell plus size apparel.
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry's key players and their market shares.
