Digging down: Industry revenue is expected to fall in 2023-24 due to a shortfall in new work damaging machinery sales

Mining, construction and civil engineering machinery sales depend on business sentiment, public infrastructure investment and construction output. The COVID-19 outbreak led to the government introducing strict social distancing measures, effectively halting construction, mining and engineering projects overnight. Over 2020, according to the ONS, construction and manufacturing output fell by 12.5% and 9.9%, while the North Sea Transition Authority reported that oil and gas companies cut expenditure by 23%. Falling investment levels and site closures were the driving forces behind revenue tanking in 2020-21. There has been a somewhat muted recovery in revenue since restrictions were eased, with repair and maintenance work up by 15% between December 2022 and February 2020, although new work was 2.1% lower. Over the five years through 2023-24, machinery sales are forecast to contract at a compound annual rate of 6.7% to £3.5 billion, including a 4.5% fall in revenue in 2023-24.

Firms in this industry distribute a range of machinery used in the construction, mining and oil and gas sectors.
