Threadbare: Manufacturers buckle down as competition from low-cost imports picks away at revenue
The Tailoring and Clothing Accessories Manufacturing industry has battled against turbulent operating conditions thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Climbing import competition has put substantial pressure on local manufacturers. Countries like China and Bangladesh have a competitive advantage over local manufacturers because of lower labour costs. Likewise, volatile consumer sentiment has meant many consumers have become more price-conscious, shifting demand towards low-cost imports. Revenue is expected to tumble at an annualised 4.9% over the past five years, to total $1.4 billion in 2022-23. This includes an anticipated 0.9% drop in 2022-23, as an appreciating Australian dollar encourages import competition and weakens exports.
Companies in the industry primarily manufacture headwear, fur or leather clothing, swimwear, gloves and other clothing accessories. The industry also includes operators that provide clothing services such as hem stitching, basque knitting and buttonholing.
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
