Turning Gears: An Anticipated Depreciating Dollar is Expected to Support Industry Exports

Printing, paper, food, textile and other machinery manufacturers are critical in supplying equipment to Canada's broader manufacturing sector. Healthy economic and population growth has led the country's manufacturing sector to flourish in recent years, benefiting machinery manufacturers. But, the COVID-19 pandemic was especially challenging for manufacturers, as disruptions to nearly every downstream market introduced unprecedented volatility. Diversification suppressed the industry's decline, but some manufacturing companies were still hit harder than others, depending on their specialization. As manufacturing and industrial capacity recovered in 2021, supply chain disruptions and workforce shortages limited growth for machinery manufacturers. Manufacturers struggled to source critical inputs even at premium prices, while workforce shortages left companies with long lead times and depressed profit. Growth remains subdued as inflation, high-interest rates and recession concerns influence how and when direct downstream markets invest in new machinery. In all, industry-wide revenue has been expanding at a CAGR of 2.7% to total an estimated $5.1 billion in 2023, when revenue will drop an expected 1.1%.

This report contains an amalgamation of disparate industrial machinery manufacturing, including machinery for food processing, such as ovens; machinery for sawmills and paper industries, such as log splitters; machinery for printing industries, such as printers; and other industrial machinery, such as knitting machinery and kilns.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
