Drug Overview
Zoladex (goserelin; AstraZeneca/TerSera Therapeutics) is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor agonist which acts on the pituitary gland to stimulate luteinizing hormone (LH) release, resulting in a temporary surge in serum testosterone levels known as "flare." Persistent use of GnRH agonists over time causes downregulation of GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, generating a significant reduction in LH and follicle-stimulating hormone secretion. This has the effect of complete shutdown of testosterone production in the testes, resulting in chemical castration.
