Through the Roof: Industry Revenue in Florida is Expected to Grow in Line With Business Spending

Over the past five years, a boom in construction activity has prompted a number of operators to enter the industry. Specifically, the value of residential construction in Florida from 2012 to 2017 has skyrocketed. Following the recession, residential building construction has expanded considerably due to falling unemployment rates and rising personal income levels. These trends have enabled residential developers and individual investors to increase spending on the construction of new homes, boosting demand for roofing construction services. Additionally, private investment in nonresidential construction has also contributed to demand growth, albeit at a slower pace. In light of heightened demand, a large number of roofing contractors have entered the industry. Demand growth for roofing installation and repair has prompted a number of new contractors to enter the industry as a number of jobs were going to out-of-state roofing companies, due to the lack of contractors in-state licensed to perform work. To this end, the number of operators has increased at an annualized rate of 5.7% to 1,517 operators over the past five years.

Industry operators install roofing and roof drainage systems, such as downspouts and gutters. Activities also include treating roofs (e.g. spraying, painting or coating), coppersmithing, tinsmithing, installing skylights, installing metal ceilings, flashing, ductwork and capping. Work performed includes new work, additions, alterations, maintenance and repairs. The industry excludes siding and sheet metal work.
