Report Scope:
Roofing materials are outer roof coverings that are used as a protective layer or support to shield structures from various natural elements. Depending upon the nature, supporting structure and application used, there is variation in roofing material types. The types of roofing materials available in the market are asphalt shingle, wood shingle, metal roofing, concrete and clay, slate, membranes, etc.
Shingle is a term used to define overlapping roofing materials that are basically available in flat and rectangular shapes. These roofing materials are used for applications such as moisture resistance, algae and microbial resistance, fire resistance, storm protection, weather changes, etc.
North America is a region with extreme winter, snowfall and storms. Due to changing environmental conditions such as hailstones, tornadoes and twisters in the North American region, an increased demand for roofing materials has been observed. Climatic change is one of the major driving factors leading to the introduction of new and improved product types in the market. The manufacturers of roofing materials are also focusing on manufacturing eco-friendly roofing technologies due to various regulations for environment protection in the region. Remodeling and renovation of infrastructure in the U.S. and Canada are projected to boost the sales of roofing materials in the North American region. There has been increasing growth in real estate investments across the region in the recent past, which is further driving the market.

Executive Summary
The asphalt shingle segment of residential roofing (comprised of LW laminate, three tab and HW laminate) accounted for the largest share of the residential roofing materials market in North America in 2017. Product demand in the region is expected to decrease slightly by 2023 due to environmental effects caused by the product. Substitute products are entering the market that is more efficient and durable. Market share of the asphalt shingle segment declined from 2017 to 2023. Volume and value changes in the asphalt shingle segment dramatically affect the North American residential roofing market. Swings in pricing and demand in this segment profoundly impact the market’s overall performance.
Several other residential roofing products were flat or up nominally in value from 2016 to 2017, including all commercially focused membrane materials (EDPM, TPO and PVC) and modified bitumen (APP and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)) products. Traditional residential products such as clay tile, wood shake and slate had modest gains. Products with technological innovation and heightened environmental awareness experienced somewhat larger increases. The most notable positive trend in the market was the high growth rates in value for environmentally responsible products promoting energy efficiency and sustainability (reflective, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) and “green” roofs). While they are very small segments, they all grew at a faster rate from 2016 to 2017. These advances were driven by the availability of incentives (including government tax credits) as well as increased demand for eco-friendly residential roofing products.
In terms of applications, the reconstruction segment accounted for the major demand for residential roofing materials in the North American region in 2017. In the North American region (especially in the U.S.) people mainly focus on remodeling and renovating their homes vs. new construction as the cost of new construction is higher. Also, climatic conditions in North America demand constant renovation of structures.
As the U.S. is a country with a large number of construction initiatives, the demand for residential roofing materials is observed to be highest in this country. The U.S. is observed to dominate the residential roofing materials market in the North American region, in terms of volume, followed by Mexico and Canada. The scenario is completely different in terms of value, as the share depends upon product prices. In terms of value, the U.S. dominated the residential roofing materials market, followed by Canada and Mexico.
