New voltage: The shift to renewable energy is prompting operators to adapt their networks

New Zealand's electricity markets are grappling with the shift to renewable energy, as the Central Government (Te Kawanatanga o Aotearoa) is aiming to reach 100% renewable electricity by 2030. In response, transmission and distribution providers, which underpin the electricity supply chain, are having to adapt their networks. The Commerce Commission (Te Komihana Tauhokohoko) regulates most of these natural monopolies, determining pricing paths in five-year blocks. Revenue has fallen 2.2% over the past five years, with an expected 0.9% recovery in 2022-23, to reach an estimated $4.7 billion.

Industry players deliver electricity to final users. Players operate low-voltage distribution systems, which include lines, meters, poles and wires. Players also operate high-voltage transmission systems that use power lines and transformer stations.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
