On March 18, 2019, AT&T announced the AT&T API Marketplace, representing a web-based CPaaS platform that provides AT&T business customers and clients access to API tools, AT&T communication services, and AT&T API support services. The new AT&T API Marketplace platform provides AT&T clients pre-packaged telecommunications software applications and APIs to embed in their websites and telecommunications applications, enabling simpler, faster and more effective ways to communicate with and provide services to their customers in near real-time.

AT&T is using this API platform to re-invent itself and change its image in the marketplace. AT&T wants to establish and maintain a developer community using AT&T API products and service. In conjunction with this program, AT&T wants to foster the development of turnkey, communication-enabled applications that can be resold. This represents a paradigm-shifting development in the Telecom API marketplace. While AT&T and other Telecom providers have offered API products for years, this is the first Telecom carrier to offer a business program to openly promote and market their APIs tools, products, and turn-key applications to both the developer community and to their business clients.

With this initiative, AT&T makes their network APIs available to business customers, third-party developers and OTT service providers to use, which allows these business customers to optimize their applications and services for better performance. This is anticipated to allow AT&T to better optimize its existing network infrastructure and capitalize on the revenue generated by these applications and OTT services.

This product announcement signals changes to the AT&T service offering and the role AT&T plays in the Application Programming Interfaces (API) marketplace.
