Scope
- Contactless payments are increasingly gaining traction for public transport. In August 2023, the Tallinn Transport Department and AS Ridango (a public transport IT company) introduced Apple Pay Express Mode for use across Tallinn’s public transport network. This contactless payment system allows users of Apple devices to purchase tickets using NFC technology without having to activate or authenticate their device. Even if the consumer’s Apple device falls to 0% battery, the Express Mode service can still be used for up to five hours afterwards.
- Buy now pay later (BNPL) services are gaining prominence as an alternative credit option, driven in part by the growing popularity of online shopping. In September 2022, Estonian payment processor and consumer credit provider ESTO partnered with Bolt (a European super-app that offers ride-hailing, rental, food and grocery delivery, and car-sharing services) to launch the Bolt Pay Later service in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The service allows users to pay for purchases in 30 days without incurring any additional fees.
- Innovative payment solutions are gradually gaining prominence in Estonia. Convenience store and fuel station chain Circle K launched its Pay by Plate technology in Estonia in June 2021, allowing customers to pay for fuel using their vehicle’s license plate. To use the service, users need to download the Circle K mobile app, then add their payment card details and their vehicle license plate under the ‘Pay with number plate’ service. When customers enter any Circle K fuel station, cameras identify the registered license plate number and activate the chosen pump for refueling. Once complete, the payment is then automatically deducted from the Circle K mobile app.
