Carbon brake discs are of two types: Carbon-Carbon Brake Disc and Carbon Ceramic Brake Disc. Carbon-carbon brake discs work at elevated temperatures and do not provide consistent friction levels at low temperatures, thus not suitable for normal road use. While carbon ceramic brake discs are made from the composite material comprising of silicon carbide, resins, fibers, etc. Carbon ceramic brake discs are used exclusively in formula 1, sports and private vehicles.

Automotive carbon ceramic brake discs are segregated into two channels on the basis of sales: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Aftermarket, where OEM is a market for the manufacture of component parts and equipment while aftermarket is a market for spare parts, components, and accessories for motor vehicles. Carbon ceramic brake discs are divided into three segments on the basis of vehicles types, which includes, Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, and Others which comprises of motorsports vehicle.
