China leads Asia-Pacific’s cross-border E-Commerce trend

Cross-border online shopper penetration rises in Asia-Pacific

Cross-border B2C E-Commerce is gaining popularity among consumers in Asia-Pacific says this report. Over the past two years, the share of digital buyers making purchases from sellers in other countries increased from above 50% to three-quarters. The top drivers of international online purchases include better prices and product quality, as well as access to exclusive products and brands not available domestically. At the same time, long delivery times, high shipping costs and lack of payment options are cited among the main barriers to cross-border E-Commerce trade.

China outpaces others in cross-border E-Commerce development

The countries with the highest cross-border online penetration rates in Asia-Pacific are China and Australia. China is also the region’s biggest E-Commerce exporter, thanks to the international popularity of China-based E-Commerce marketplaces such as AliExpress. Online shoppers from Indonesia, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand buy from China more than from any other country, according to a 2019 survey cited in this report. Other popular destinations for cross-border online shopping by consumers in Asia-Pacific include Japan, South Korea, the USA, and the EU.
