Single-Port Robotic Surgery in Urology: The New Beginning After the Advent of Dedicated Platforms describes the novel field of robotic single-port urologic surgery. Recent advances in surgical robotics combined with the pursuit to reduce the invasiveness of laparoscopic surgery have led to the development of novel robotic platforms specifically designed for single-port surgery. This reference summarizes the state-of-the-art of robotic single-port urologic surgery. Coverage takes a three-part approach, providing a description of the technological evolution which led to the advent of novel platforms specifically designed for single-port surgery, describing the urological procedures that can be performed, and outcomes and potential drawbacks.

Authors

Riccardo Bertolo Urologist, San Carlo di Nancy Hospital, Rome, Italy - Robotic Surgery. Riccardo Bertolo works as a staff urologist at San Carlo di Nancy Hospital in Rome (Italy). His surgical activity is focused on urologic minimally-invasive surgery for the treatment of prostate, kidney and urothelial cancers and benign ureteral diseases. He attended a fellowship in robotic urology at Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio, USA), and got a PhD in Bioengineering applied to Medical-Surgical sciences at the polytechnic of Turin (Italy). He is Board Member of the Young Academic Urologists - Renal Cancer Working Party within the European Association of Urology (EAU). He is associate member of the EAU robotic urology section (ERUS). He serves as social-media editor for the Urology Video Journal (Elsevier) and as associate editor for the URO-ONCO renal cell carcinoma edu platform. He is Board Member of the Italian Society of Urology (SIU) research office and of the Italian Group for Advanced Laparo-Endoscopic Surgery (AGILE).
He is qualified to be Associate Professor of Urology since 2017. His research fields cover urological oncology and technological innovations in minimally-invasive surgery. Dr. Bertolo has published over 170 papers on the most prestigious peer-reviewed urology and surgery journals and serves as reviewer for more than 40 peer-reviewed journal including the most prestigious green-list urology journals. Jihad Kaouk Associate Professor and Director, Center for Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery, Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, USA. Jihad H. Kaouk, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Surgery and the Director of the Center for Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery in the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is a leader in the development of innovative surgical techniques and specializes in robotics and laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Kaouk developed a new surgical approach at Cleveland Clinic, known as single-port laparoscopy, that results in little or no scarring after surgery and reduces complications and pain. Dr. Kaouk received the Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award in 2006, he was named in Who's Who in America and one of America's Top Physicians in Urology by Consumers' Research Council from 2005-2007. Dr. Kaouk received First Prize in the 18th World Congress on Endourology and received the best overall research paper award at the 26th World Congress on Endourology.
