China gained its first record success in electric vehicles in 1990, when the country saw the highest growth in two wheeled electric bicycle. The growth was driven by favourable regulatory practices and government support. China used to face severe air pollution due to its dependence on fossil fuelled vehicles. Electric car manufacturing in China started post 2000, and the country today is the largest market globally.
At the start of the year 2021, compulsory emission quotas for internal combustion engines and electric vehicles have been being tightened in order to support EVs sales to form reach 20% of new car sales by 2025. In the period January to October 2021, new EV deliveries grew by 191.9% year-on-year to reach 2.14 million units and captured a 13% share of the market. BYD, Tesla and Wuling were the market leaders in terms of sales.
Even though the EV market in China is recovering, factors such as, the overall contraction of the Chinese economy due to the pandemic need to be factored in. In the period January 2020 to March 2020, the country’s GDP shrank by 6.8% year-on-year.
