The global protein chip market was valued at $652.8 million in 2020, and is projected to reach $1,367.1 million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 7.5% from 2021 to 2030.

Protein chips, also known as protein microarrays, are miniaturized and parallel assay systems that contain small amounts of purified proteins in a high-density format. They allow simultaneous determination of a great variety of analytes from small amounts of samples within a single experiment.

Protein microarray or chip technology is a process of immobilizing proteins on to a solid slide support and utilizing a miniaturized assay to demonstrate protein interactions that has been developed steadily in past years. It is a powerful methodology in a high-throughput format to analyze thousands of known proteins in a single experiment. Protein microarrays are indispensable tools for proteomic applications, multi-parameter clinical diagnostic tests, and many other fields. Protein chips are used for development of new assay detection of protein-binding properties (protein-protein interaction, protein-peptide interaction, protein-DNA interaction, protein-small molecule interaction, and protein-glycan interaction), profiling monoclonal antibody specificity, biomarker identification, and host-pathogen interactions.

Major factors that impact growth of the protein chip market include increase in global burden of cancer, which has significantly mounted over the past decade as protein chips can be used in detection of particular cancer protein for accurate cancer diagnosis and finalization of treatment therapy. In addition, biomarkers have the potential to improve early diagnosis rate of cancer. However, owing to the drawback of traditional biomarkers and diagnostic methods, they are not an ideal diagnostic tools in clinical practice. Therefore, new biomarkers and simple and efficient test methods such as a smaller sample and miniaturization and protein microarray technology do have great potential in cancer diagnosis. However, complexity of protein microarray (chip) during production and quantification is expected to impede growth of the protein chip market during the forecast period.

The market is expected to witness moderate growth during the forecast period, owing to technological advancements in protein chip and increase in private funding and government grants for R&D in protein chip.

The protein chip market is segmented on the basis of technology, application, end user, and region. By technology, it is divided into analytical microarrays, functional protein microarrays, and reverse phase protein microarrays. The application segment includes diagnostics, proteomics, and antibody characterization. The end user segment includes hospitals & clinics, diagnostic laboratories, academic & research institutes, and pharmaceutical & biotechnological companies. Region wise, the market is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.

The prominent players in the market have adopted various strategies for increasing their market share. These include expansion of their geographical presence through collaborations and partnerships and increase in investment in developing long-acting and effective products with lower adverse effects. Major players operating in the protein chip market include Raybiotech Inc, Illumina Inc, Quotient limited, Agilent Technologies, Thermofisher Scientific, Perkin Elmer, Bio-Rad laboratories, Danher Corporation, Merck KGGA, Arrayit Corporation.

North America accounted for the highest share in the protein chip market in 2020, and is expected to dominate during the forecast period. Whereas Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at the highest CAGR.
