The North-America soil moisture sensor market is projected to witness a CAGR of 16.28% during the forecast period to reach a market size of US$216.161 million by 2026, increasing from US$75.183 million in 2019. The North American region is highly developed makes more use of technologies in agriculture compared to other developing or underdeveloped regions. The use of technologies in the region has been increasing and is being supplemented with government support, which is anticipated to have a positive impact on the soil moisture sensor market as well. Furthermore, the arable land area has been declining in North America, which coupled with an increasing population, is leading to increased food demand and is expected to boost the adoption of soil moisture sensors in the region during the forecast period.

The recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease had a negative impact on the North American soil moisture sensor market. The pandemic severely impacted the North American region, especially the United States, and hence the governments implemented long lockdowns and strict COVID-19 measures which negatively impacted various end-use industries. The construction and sports activities were halted which led to a decline in the demand for soil moisture sensors. Furthermore, supply chain disruptions, restrictions on the gathering of people, and shortage of labor impacted agriculture negatively as well, which further harmed the market growth of the soil moisture sensor market.

Decline in arable land

The North American region has been witnessing a significant decline in arable land over the years, which is leading to an increased need to use techniques for increasing crop yield with fewer resources. This is propelling an increased demand for soil moisture sensors in the region and hence is anticipated to boost the market growth during the forecast period. According to data from the World Bank, the share of arable land in the total land area of the United States has decreased from 19.14% in 2001 to 17.24% in 2018. The arable land in the country reached 157.737 million hectares in 2018, down from 175.400 million hectares in 2001. A decline in the arable land area has been witnessed in Canada as well where the arable land has decreased from 1.335 hectares per person in 2000 to 1.044 hectares per person in 2018. Similar is the case with Mexico, where the arable land has witnessed a decline from 0.232 hectares per person in 2000 to 0.189 hectares per person in 2018.

Growing population leading to rising food demand

Coupled with the decline in arable land, the rising population in the region, and the consequent growing demand for food is supplementing the rising demand for soil moisture sensors to help increase productivity. According to data from the World Bank, the population of the United States has increased from 309.327 million in 2010 to 329.484 million in 2020. The population in Canada and Mexico have grown by 11.76% and 13.00% respectively during the same time period. The trend is projected to continue in the future and is anticipated to increase the food demand and boost the growth of the soil moisture sensor market in North America in the coming years.
