Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are biological antifreeze molecules discovered in polar fish for the first time. AFPs can adhere to ice and hence hinder the formation of ice crystals. In a literal sense, however, the word AFP is a misnomer because AFP does not prevent the freezing of blood serum or AFP-containing solutions. The ice structuring protein (ISP), which isn't commonly used, is interchangeable with AFP. AFPs, on the other hand, are a subset of IBPs, which also contain ice-nucleating proteins. In other words, while all AFPs are IBPs, not all IBPs are AFPs.
