This 145-page report, based on a representative survey of 1,076 US full time college students at 4-year colleges and universities in the United States, presents highly detailed data on the perceptions of college students about how the pandemic have impacted their mental health and their personal prospects.  We asked the representative panel how the pandemic impacted their capacity to make and maintain friendships, whether they have had to intervene to help a fellow student in psychological crisis, and how the pandemic had impacted their overall mental health.  We asked about plans to see a therapist or counselor in the next year, and also asked students if they had entertained suicidal thoughts in the past year.

In addition, the report gives detailed data on student assessment of the performance of the college mental health service during the crisis. In addition to quantitative questions, we also asked students to expound on how the pandemic had impacted them.

Just a few of this 145-page report’s many findings are that:

  • 13% of the quintile of the most religious students on campus have entertained suicidal thoughts during the pandemic.
  • Female students were nearly twice as likely as male students but only about half as likely as transgender students to feel that they will visit a counselor or therapist within the next year.
  • 51% of students who grew up in rural areas felt that the pandemic had significantly impacted their capacity to make and maintain friendships.
  • Gay and bisexual students had a tougher time than straight students; more than 66% of gay students and nearly 64% of bisexual ones had a tough time vs.nearly 51% of straight students.

Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables.
