A breast lift with implants, which is medically referred to as a mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to elevate/reshape sagging breasts, enhance breast fullness, reposition drooping nipples, and improve breast symmetry. The procedure can involve the use of a breast implant to increase the volume of the breast. When there is mild sagging to the breasts, an implant alone can produce a rejuvenated appearance with only a minimal skin incision. Any incision, however, is expected to result in permanent scars. The procedure can restore a more youthful-looking shape to the breast.
Breast ptosis, sagging, or descent of the breast is a common occurrence with age or following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. Ptosis can be classified using the Regnault classification system. This commonly used system describes ptosis by the relative position of the nipple-areolar complex (NAC) and the inframammary fold. As the breast enlarges with age, weight, or hormonal changes, the skin envelope, supporting ligaments, and ducts stretch. These then fail to retract when the volume decreases. As a result, breast position is lower on the chest wall, breast contour changes, and upper pole fullness is decreased. Mastopexy seeks to restore a youthful shape and contour of the breast by transposing the nipple-areolar complex (NAC) to a more desirable position on the breast mound. This can be accomplished through various approaches that differ with respect to skin incisions, parenchymal redistribution and fixation, auto-augmentation, or augmentation with implant.

Some of the complications associated with breast lifts surgery are scar, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and loss of nipple or areola.

Scars - can fade over time. Changes in nipple or breast sensation -this usually comes back within a couple of weeks, but it can sometimes be permanent. Breasts that are different shapes or sizes heal at a different pace and loss of nipple or areola- this is rare, but can happen if the procedure causes blood loss to the area.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel, rapidly changing pandemic. It has affected specialized medical services in unprecedented ways. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA β-coronavirus. SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was first reported in late 2019 in Wuhan, China and has rapidly developed into a global pandemic and public health emergency. Surgical decision making, always the most important aspect of care has taken on an added layer of complexity in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, recommendations for breast reconstruction during COVID-19 was challenging.

The overall impact of COVID-19 remains negative in the initial phase of pandemic on mastopexy market, due to decline in number of surgical procedures. Although, the report based on survey conducted during the pandemic, by American Society of Plastic Surgeon, the 11% of women indicated they are more interested in cosmetic plastic surgery or non-surgical procedures now than before COVID-19, and the figure is even higher among women who have already had surgery or a procedure, which was around 24%, respectively.

Also, 35% of women who have previously had at least one cosmetic surgical procedure or minimally invasive procedure, plan to spend significantly or somewhat more on treatments in 2021 than in 2020. Moreover, the surgical procedures require the routine use of reusable equipment with close contact with patients. This increases the risk of disease transmission. Therefore, the impact of COVID-19 remains negative during the initial phase of pandemic, but the growth of the mastopexy market has accelerated post-COVID.

Factors such as rise in female geriatric population and increase in demands for aesthetic procedures are the major drivers that propel the growth of mastopexy market during the forecast period.

According, to the United Census Bureau, the global-female-geriatric population is estimated to reach 4,139 million by 2030 from 3,601 million as recorded in 2015. Enhancing one’s self-esteem and body image is one of the many benefits of having breast augmentation surgery. Moreover, women older than 40 tend to experience loss of volume with a lot of excess skin on the breast due to childbirth or weight loss. Also, older women are typically more self-assured about their life and are often more financially secure than many younger women, which contributes to this growing trend. Therefore, due to increase in female population, the procedures of breast augmentation increase that also improves the physical appearance of women if they believe that their breasts are too large or too small.

Moreover, growth of the healthcare infrastructure and rise in income levels in developing countries such as China, India, and Brazil, are contributing to the rise in demand for cosmetic breast lifting procedures.

Post-surgery complications such as scar, changes in nipple or breast sensation and loss of nipple or areola, high cost of the surgical procedures and shortage of skilled workforce are expected to be the significant restraints to the market growth during the forecast period. A breast lift procedure can be costlier than a breast implant. The cost of breast lifting surgeries ranges between $9,000 and $16,000. On the other hand, the cost of breast implants ranges from $6,000 to $12,000. Silicone implants had been utilized in 84% and saline implants in 16% of all the breast augmentations in 2020.

Executive Summary

According to the report, titled, “Mastopexy Market," the mastopexy market was valued at $3.2 billion in 2021, and is estimated to reach $5.9 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.3% from 2022 to 2031.

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to change the shape of the breasts. In a breast lift, excess skin is removed and breast tissue is reshaped to raise the breasts. There are many causes for breast changes, including pregnancy, during which the ligaments that support the breasts might stretch as the breasts get fuller and heavier. This stretching might contribute to sagging breasts after pregnancy. Weight fluctuations or changes in weight can cause the breast skin to stretch and lose elasticity and another cause is gravity, over time, gravity causes ligaments in the breasts to stretch and sag. Also, owing to ageing, the tissue and structure of the breasts begin to change. This is due to differences in the reproductive hormone levels caused by the natural process of aging. As a result of these changes, the breasts begin to lose their firmness and fullness.

Mastopexy or breast lift can reduce sagging and increase the position of the nipples and the darker area surrounding the nipples (areolae). The size of the areolae can also be reduced during the procedure to keep them in proportion to the newly shaped breasts. The breast lift could be done in the cases when, breasts have lost shape and volume, or they've gotten flatter and longer, when the breasts are unsupported and fall below the breast creases, when nipples and areolae point downward and in case when one of the breasts falls lower than the other.

Some of the risks associated with the breast uplift process include, scarring- while scars are permanent, they'll soften and fade within one to two years. Scars from a breast lift can usually be hidden by bras and bathing suits. Rarely, poor healing can cause scars to become thick and wide. Irregularities or asymmetry in the shape and size of the breasts- this could occur as a result of changes during the healing process. Also, surgery might not successfully correct pre-existing asymmetry. Changes in nipple or breast sensation- while sensation typically returns within several weeks, some loss of feeling might be permanent. Erotic sensation typically isn't affected and partial or total loss of the nipples or areolae- rarely, the blood supply to the nipple or areola is interrupted during a breast lift. This can damage breast tissue in the area and lead to partial or total loss of the nipple or areola.

Factors that drive the growth of the mastopexy industry include rise in female geriatric population, which leads to increase in the mastopexy procedure. The tissue and structure of women's breasts change as they age. This is due to changes in reproductive hormone levels induced by the natural aging process. Thus, breasts of aged women begin to lose firmness and fullness. Moreover, in 2020, the elderly women accounted for more than 13% of the global population. By 2025, there are expected to be 604 million aged women in the world, with 70% of them living in developing countries and 70% in rural regions. Therefore, increase in female geriatric population leads to increase in mastopexy procedure, which is expected to drive the growth of the market.

Another factor that drives the growth of the mastopexy industry is increase in medical tourism, as the cost of medical treatment is exorbitant in the developed countries, owing to very high quality of treatment available there. Also, the price of medical devices or healthcare products are relatively higher when compared to developing countries. As a result, many people rely on medical tourism and travel overseas to get surgical procedures in time and prevent aggravating the medical difficulties of the overseas patients.

The mastopexy market size is segmented on the basis of type, end use and region. On the basis of type, the mastopexy market forecast is segmented into Benelli lift or donut lift, crescent breast lift, lollipop breast lift and anchor breast lift and on the basis of end use, the market is bifurcated into hospitals and specialty clinics.

North America accounted for a majority of the mastopexy market share in 2021 and is anticipated to remain dominant during the forecast period. This is attributed to rise in number of surgical procedures for breast augmentation and breast reduction, increase in number of geriatric female populations, presence of key players and advancement in healthcare in the region. Asia-Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth, owing to surge in the medical tourism owing to high cost in the developed countries and a greater range of surgical options available, which is expected to lead to significant growth of the mastopexy market trends in the near future.

Some of the major companies that operate in the mastopexy market size are AbbVie, GC Aesthetics, Hologic, Mentor (Johnson & Johnson), Polytech Health & Aesthetics, Sientra Inc, Bausch Health, Establishment Labs, Lipoelastic and Guangzhou Wanhe Plastic Materials.
