    Report

  • November 2022
  • Region: Global
  • Primary Research Group
  • ID: 5693149

The study presents data from 122 department chairs from more than 100 colleges and universities in the USA and Canada.  Department chairs provide answers to questions about how they feel about their compensation and workload, and how they stack up against their peers.  The study helps its readers to answer questions such as:  which department chairs are likely to leave for other institutions?  How many are actually planning to leave and when? How much time do chairs spend on their chair-related responsibilities and how do they view their workload?  How many feel that conditions for chairs are better elsewhere?  How do male and female chairs compare in their level of work satisfaction?  In which academic fields are chairs more likely to leave for other positions?  How do departmental size and length of tenure served as chair impact chair satisfaction in their positions?

Just a few of this 51-page report’s many findings are:

  • Nearly 19% of department chairs in colleges charging less than $7000 per year in annual tuition thought that they were very likely or likely to depart within the next three years.
  • Chair in communications and journalism spent the most time on chair-related work responsibilities, a mean of 146.67 hours per month.
  • Personal age was influential in explaining how the chair felt they were treated.  Virtually all chairs in the sample who felt that they were treated usually unfairly by college/university administration were under age 49.

Data in the report is broken out by personal characteristics such as age and gender, by departmental variables such as academic field, instructor size, and the number of years the department chair has served, as well as by institutional variables such as overall enrollment, tuition, public/private status, and Carnegie class.
