The driver monitoring system (DMS) also referred as driver state sensing (DSS) system is a vehicle safety system that prevents the accidents caused by driver getting drowsy. DMS utilizes two or more cameras which are used to track/monitor the drivers’ eyes and raise an alarm if the attention level of the driver is compromised. It utilizes driver facing camera equipped with infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to “see/detect” the driver’s face even at night and see/detect the driver’s eyes even if the driver is wearing dark sunglasses. Moreover, DMS also detects the driver vigilance by measuring engagement in multi-tasking activities such as eating, drinking, using cellphone and others.

Several companies are focusing on development of driver monitoring system with enhanced sensors, which fuels the growth of the sensors segment. For instance, in 2020, Lucid Motors unveiled its DreamDrive system, which is a sensor suite that advances advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technologies to near-semi autonomous levels. Lucid Motors will equip DreamDrive technology into company’s first pure electric luxury car with combination of a driver monitoring system.
