An anti-tank guided missile system whose primary purpose is to destroy tanks and other armored vehicles. Anti-tank missile systems incapacitate armored vehicles by penetrating and destroying thick armor. This missile guidance system allows infantry to overrun even main battle tanks (MBTs) with reactive armor, assembling armor from a distance without endangering the operator's life.
Ground-launched anti-tank missiles are designed to be launched from the ground onto armored vehicles or soldiers. These missiles can efficiently hit and defeat ground targets such as heavily armored tanks and other armored combat vehicles. Several governments have initiated development of advanced anti-tank missile systems which is expected to drive the growth of the segment during the forecast period. For instance, in April 2022, India carried out a successful flight test of the anti-tank guided missile Helina in Pokhran. The missile is guided by an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) operating in the “lock on before launch” mode.
In February 2022, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) signed a contract with the Indian Army for the manufacturing and supply of Konkurs-M anti-tank guided missiles to the Indian Army.
The missile guidance system market is segmented on the basis of launch platform, type, end use, and region. By launch platform, it is segmented into air-to-air, air-to-surface, surface-to-air, anti-ship and anti-tank. By type, it is classified into command guidance system, beam rider guidance system, homing guidance system and inertial guidance system. Executive Summary
The Missile Guidance System Market is likely to experience a significant growth rate of 4.7% from 2022-2031 owing to increasing market demand from defense sector.A missile guidance system is a system that keeps a missile on the proper trajectory from launcher to target according to signals received from control points, targets, or other sources. The missile's guidance system keeps the missile in the correct flight attitude.
Key factors driving the growth of the missile guidance system market include rise in territorial disputes, growth in defense budget of the military, and development of hypersonic missiles. Various nations throughout the world are investing much in the development of hypersonic missiles to acquire military superiority. The U.S. deploy hypersonic weapons by the mid-2020s, despite increased efforts by Russia and China to deploy hypersonic technologies significantly sooner than the U.S. Russia declared its Avengard missile operational in 2019 and has updated Kh-32s to carry hypersonic missiles, while China has created the DF-17 (a Chinese hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV)) that could potentially strike the United States. Due to this, the U.S.is increasing its spending, which included large contracts to develop hypersonic weapons. For instance, in July 2021, the U.S. Air Force’s AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon is poised to be the first hypersonic offensive system to move from development to procurement. In addition, the U.S. is also developing a common missile body for use by multiple military branches (C-HGB). According to the Department of Defense, by 2027, the Institute for Defense and Government (IDGA) projects an estimated total of $127.3 billion that will be spent on hypersonic weaponry alone, and Defense Department budget numbers in the U.S. expect $2.5 billion in classified hypersonic work through just 2024. Thus, the rise in initiatives to development for hypersonic weapons is expected to bolster the growth of the missile guidance system market during the forecast period.
The market also offers growth opportunities to the key players in the market. Precision guided weapon system or precision-guided munitions belongs to a category of weapon which can be aimed & directed against a single target. These weapons rely on external guidance system or their own guidance system. In addition, most countries follow the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) to minimize collateral damage, including unintentional destruction of civilian property and civilian casualties (CIVCAS). Circular Error Probability (CEP) measures the weapon's accuracy. Moreover, strategic partnerships and collaborations have emerged as key trend in precision-guided munition. For instance, in April 2021, Rheinmetall, a German company that manufactures equipment and systems for government military ground, security, air, and naval forces and specialises in precision-guided munitions, partnered with Northrop Grumman, a US-based aerospace and defense company, to develop precision-guided enhanced range artillery ammunition.
The missile guidance system market is segmented into launch platform, type, end use, and region. On the basis of launch platform, the market is categorized into air-to-air, air-to-surface, surface-to-air, anti-ship and anti-tank. On the basis of type, it is categorized into command guidance system, beam rider guidance system, homing guidance system and inertial guidance system. On the basis of end use, it is fragmented into ground vehicles, combat aircrafts, ships, submarines and UAV’s. Region wise, it is analyzed across North America (the U.S., Canada, and Mexico), Europe (Germany, France, UK, Russia, and rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, India, South Korea, and rest of Asia-Pacific), and LAMEA (Latin America, Middle East, and Africa).
The key players profiled in the study include BAE System PLC, ELBIT SYSTEM LTD., Leonardo S.P.A, General Dynamic Corporations, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Raytheon Technologies Corporation, Saab AB, Safran S.A., Thales Group, The Boeing Company, DRDOS (Defense Research and Development Organization). The players in the market have been actively engaged in the adoption various strategies such as contract, partnership, product launch and product development to remain competitive and gain advantage over the competitors in the market. For instance, in August 2022, Raytheon Technologies Corp. received an order of $67.3 million to continue providing parts for upgrading the obsolescent AGM-88 High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile counter-radar weapon with improved precision.
