The global heat interface unit market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.85% during the forecast period to reach US$387.362 million by 2027, from US$243.557 million in 2020.

Heat interface units are usually used in heat networks that use a centralized heat source to distribute hot water through a network of insulated pipes. The heat interface units act as a bridge between the central boiler and hot water outlets in each apartment. Furthermore, this eliminates the need to install individual boilers in each dwelling and proves to be an affordable and energy-efficient solution. Additionally, it requires minimal installation, and low maintenance reduces carbon footprint by adhering to renewable energy requirements and is compact.

An increase in awareness towards monitoring energy consumption and an increase in demand for renewable energy solutions is expected to boost the global heat interface unit market.

Increasing challenges such as climate crisis, urbanization, greenhouse gas emissions, poorly insulated homes, and the use of domestic boilers have shifted the focus towards energy-efficient solutions. The rise in energy consumption by the residential sector requires an efficient monitoring system which is catered by heat interface units that are usually installed with heat meters and help in controlling and monitoring heat usage. Additionally, as per International Energy Agency, most of the energy used in US homes is for heating purposes and electricity consumption accounted for 43% in 2021. Furthermore, the European commission recorded that households in the EU consumed 62.8% of their energy for heating purposes and 15.1% for water heating purposes. Therefore, heat interface units are increasingly demanded by consumers as it reduces energy bills, eliminates the requirement for gas supply, provides a meter reading facility, and effectively implementation of zero carbon technology that increases energy efficiency.

Moreover, heat interface units can also work alongside renewable technologies such as solar PV or air source pumps as these systems can provide people with reliable heating facilities and help in preventing energy waste. Furthermore, government initiatives such as the initiative for clean heating and cooling systems in buildings by introducing cold climate heat pump technology, advanced water heaters, and smarter HVAC diagnostic tools that help contractors to monitor efficient energy consumption in residential and commercial buildings propelled the market for heat interface units.

However, the issue of water contamination due to iron oxide and the difficulty of flushing systems that are installed within heat interface units combined with maintaining the long-term performance of heat interface units can hinder the global heat interface unit market.

Market Developments:

  • Modutherm launched MTA PLUS - a new and high-performance heat interface unit in April 2022. It is an indirect HIU with two high-performance SWEP LAS heat exchangers that deliver impressive output from a low-temperature energy source with DHW up to 75kW and heating up to 10kW.
  • Ideal Heating launched PO in September 2021. It is a heat interface unit that is designed for use in centralized heat networks for newly built homes, social housing, and retrofitting legacy housing stock. The unit comes with an indirect twin plate for hot water outputs in 30,40,50,60 and 70kW and a direct single plate for hot water output in 30,40, 50, and 60kW.

Product Offerings

  • Combined Heat Interface Unit - by AET. The product is for district heating plants meant for cooling, heating, and domestic hot water production by using plate heat exchangers. The central boiler or chiller provides primary hot and chilled fluids through the main pumps. The plate heat exchangers are placed between the primary and secondary circuit that separates them and allow for independent regulation in each apartment.
  • BESA Heat Interface Unit - by Bosch Thermo Technology. The product is a Greenstar Heat Interface Unit that offers 21 liters per minute flow rate, temperature control, domestic hot water, and central heating on demand with hydraulic system separation and incorporates components such as differential pressure that reduces valve and summer bypass.
During the forecast period, North America is expected to gain a significant share of the global heat interface unit market.

The increase in direct carbon emissions need for energy-efficient technology, and government initiatives for boosting renewable energy sources are increasing the demand for heat interface units. Moreover, the majority of homes in the USA rely on natural gas for heating through air furnaces or boilers. According to US Energy Information Administration, the natural gas consumption for US residential sector accounted for 4.72 trillion cubic feet and about half of the homes used it for space and water heating. Therefore, demand for heat interface systems and integrated systems that uses renewable technology is increasing in the region. As per the Centre for Climate change and Energy Solutions, renewables made up to 20% of utility-scale US electricity generation in 2020 of which hydropower accounted for 7.3% and solar power 3.3 %. Further, the Asia Pacific heat interface unit market is expected to grow rapidly.
