The global biomass gasification market was valued at $88.0 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $188.5 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 8% from 2022 to 2031.

Biomass gasification is the process of generating heat and hydrogen gas through controlled combustion of organic mass obtained for plants and animals. The increase in rural electrification rate, particularly in developing countries, has escalated the demand for decentralized electricity generation, which is majorly driving the global biomass gasification market toward growth. Besides this, the widespread acceptance of these systems for waste processing as a replacement for conventional techniques, such as incineration and landfill, is further fueling the market growth. Moreover, the leading market players and governments of various nations have been consistently investing in the development of advanced technologies, which is contributing to market growth. Even though electrification is happening at a very fast pace, still rural areas do not have access to electricity. Many villages have started to establish biomass plants for harvesting energy and use it in obtaining biogas for cooking and heat energy for electrification. Establishing these plants also reaps their incentives from the government through various schemes and subsidies which in turn benefits both parties. It also helps in reducing carbon emissions from smoke that comes through cooking by burning coal or wood in rural setups
For instance, the United States Depart of Energy (USDOE) is developing innovative and flexible modular designs through the Gasification Systems Program. This aids in the conversion of different types of US domestic coal blends, waste plastics, and municipal solid waste (MSW) into clean synthesis gas. The European Union has a target of a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a net zero ambition by 2050. It is critical that the legislative frameworks and associated policies enable a Just Energy Transition where no one is left behind. The aforementioned reasons act as driving factors for the region's growth which is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. Slow growth in the LAMEA region was owing to the lack of technology. Moreover, higher installation costs also add up to several restraining factors of the market. However, technological advancements and government incentives offer opportunities for market growth during the projection period.

Furthermore, the rising development and commercialization of small- to large-scale biomass gasification systems combined with power generation equipment is positively influencing the market across the globe. However, the high capital required for installation and maintenance hampers market growth for biomass gasification. While the technological advancements prove to be a major challenge for the industry growth, technologies that will reduce tar production and increase plant efficiency are the need of the hour and thus will open wide opportunities
The biomass gasification market size is segmented on the basis of gasifier type, application, source, and region. Based on gasifier type, the market is segmented into moving or fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained, and others. Fluidized bed gasifiers are expected to grow majorly during the projection period. Depending on the application, the market is divided into chemicals, liquid fuels, power, and gas fuels. Power application will be the highest growing application for biomass gasification during the forecast period. On the basis of source, the market is further classified into solid biomass, liquid biomass, biogas, municipal waste, and others. Solid biomass dominated the market share and is expected to grow its contribution at a higher CAGR over the projection period.

Region-wise, the biomass gasification market analysis is done across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA (Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa). Region-wise, Europe is projcetd to lead the market growth during 2022-2031 owing to its 2030 targets for the reduction of carbon emissions. Executive Summary

According to the report titled, “Biomass Gasification Market," The biomass gasification market was valued at $88.0 billion in 2021, and is estimated to reach $188.5 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 8% from 2022 to 2031.

Biomass gasification is a mature technology. It is done through a controlled process that involves heat, steam, and oxygen which converts biomass to hydrogen and other products. This process occurs without any combustion. The growing biomass removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during the process. This method helps in reducing net carbon emissions. The method can also be combined with carbon capture, utilization, and storage for the long term. Gasification plants for hydrogen production and other fuels are being planned on a large scale by both government and private players in the industry. The vast amount of organic waste and resource generation potential is expected to act as a growth factor for the biomass gasification market. The projected exponential increase in the substantial amount of waste and the increased deployment of biomass-based gasification technologies are expected to play a vital role in managing waste.

Moreover, energy generation and other related industries like hydrogen generation and liquid fuel generation can be done at lower environmental costs. In addition, biomass gasification will aid in clean energy ambitions enabling the creation of a circular economy. Biomass gasification has applications in the chemical industry as catalysts, feedstock, and others. The gasifiers produce gases and fuel that have applications in chemical industries. They can be used in burners, such as boilers, furnaces, and for co-firing. The gasification by-products are widely used in several combined-process that takes place in chemical industries. They are also used as feed-in gas into the gas grid. They are also used in synthesis reactors.

Since carbon emissions have tremendously increased in the last few decades, curing them has gained momentum across the globe. Many government and market players are actively investing in environment-friendly options to reduce carbon emissions. Green fuels and biofuels are being adopted for such purposes. Hydrogen produced through biomass gasification is used as liquid fuel in the aviation and aerospace sector. The global energy shift is taking place at a high pace. This is owed to the pledges and net zero targets set by various countries and unions in order to reduce their carbon footprints. Gaseous fuels are viable options that support this energy transition. Biomass gasification offers a considerable amount of clean gas that can be used as fuel and feedstock for several applications.

Since there is the presence of lots of biomass, the use of this as feedstock in the gasification process is significantly increasing at a higher rate. In many parts of the world, especially rural areas and villages, biomass gasification plants are established that provide electric power to the area. For countries like India where the rural sector is still not able to access primary energy benefits, biomass gasification schemes by the Indian government under Decentralized Energy Systems of India (DESI) harness electricity for economic activities. Biogas contains about 55-65% of methane, 35- 44% of carbon dioxide, and traces of other gases, such as Hydrogen Sulphide, Nitrogen, and Ammonia. Biogas, in its raw form, is used as clean cooking fuel like LPG, lighting, motive power, and generation of electricity. Further, biogas can be purified and upgraded up to 98% purity of methane content to make it suitable to be used as a green and clean fuel for transportation. Such application of biogas enables it as a good source for biomass gasification.

Municipal waste contains biogenic materials, combustible non-biomass, and non-combustible non-biomass material. Biogenic materials are paper, cardboard, food waste, grass clippings, leaves, wood, and leather products. Non-biomass combustible materials contain plastics and other synthetic materials made from petroleum. non-combustible non-biomass material contains glass and metals. MSW is combusted in biomass gasification plants at large scale. The MSW is first segregated and later on subjected to combustion in the gasification plants. Many countries use waste-to-energy plants to capture the energy in MSW. The use of waste-to-energy plants in some European countries and Japan is relatively high.

The major advantage of biomass gasification is to convert waste into useful conventional energy such as power generation, and gas & liquid biofuels, which will further contribute to circular economy targets. For instance, in India, biomass contributes around 32% of the primary energy mix. About 750 million metric tons of biomass are generated annually in the country. It also has about 230 million metric tons of biomass waste from the agricultural sector which is usually a major contributor to the feedstock. Biomass gasification technology is not as efficient for energy production as fossil fuels. It can also lead to unintentional deforestation for feedstock requirements. Moreover, the plant setup requires large lands and space which is likely to be less available due to land scarcity in many populated economies with high biomass waste generation such as India, China, Brazil, and South Africa.

The biomass gasification market size is segmented based on gasifier type, application, source, and region. Based on gasifier type, the market is segmented into moving or fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained, and others. Depending on the application, the market is divided into chemicals, liquid fuels, power, and gas fuels. On the basis of source, the market is further classified into solid biomass, liquid biomass, biogas, municipal waste, and others. Region-wise, the biomass gasification market analysis is done across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA (Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa).
