The cement industry in United States is expected to grow by 3.5% on an annual basis to reach US$ 9.64 billion in 2024.
The United States cement market is expected to record steady growth over the medium term. Innovation is growing rapidly in the sector, with government funding programs being launched for the decarbonization of the cement industry. The Department of Energy, for instance, has announced funding of over US$1.2 billion for four member companies of the Portland Cement Association (PCA).
Fortera, a cement manufacturer based in California, has developed a new technology to capture CO2 emissions from the kilns used in cement production. Holcim US, in April 2024, announced an investment of US$20.5 million for expanding low-carbon cement capacity. Overall, the publisher maintains a positive growth outlook for the cement industry in the United States over the next three to four years.
The new 116-foot cement storage dome that has been added in Fremont, Nebraska, seeks to drive up the capacity for Holcim’s low-carbon ECOPlanet cement. This has been used in notable projects like the Seattle Spheres. Located on 25 acres, the dome can store up to 50,000 tons of cement. The Fremont storage dome allows Holcim to meet the Nebraska Department of Transportation's requirements for blended cement, utilizing the state's natural aggregate. The cement, blended and distributed at the Fremont terminal, includes natural pozzolan, a binding agent that results in a lower-carbon product compared to traditional Portland cement.
The medium to long term growth story in country remains intact. The cement industry in country is expected to grow steadily over the next four quarters. The growth momentum is expected to continue over the forecast period, recording a CAGR of 3.6% during 2024-2028. The cement output in the country is expected to increase from US$ 9.31 billion in 2023 to reach US$ 11.10 billion by 2028.

The Department of Energy grants more than US$1.2 billion for decarbonization of cement industry
The United States Department of Energy has announced, in March 2024, funding of over US$1.2 billion for four member companies of the Portland Cement Association (PCA). This financial support, derived from the Biden Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), is designed to help decarbonize challenging industries. This initiative is part of a broader effort to invest US$6 billion into reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the industrial sector.- Heidelberg Materials US, Inc. has been awarded up to US$500 million. The Mitchell Cement Plant Decarbonization Project aims to develop and manage an integrated carbon capture, transport, and storage system at Heidelberg’s newly upgraded facility in Mitchell, Indiana. This initiative will capture at least 95% of the carbon dioxide emissions, storing the CO2 in a geological formation beneath the plant. Expected to prevent 2 million tons of carbon dioxide annually from entering the atmosphere, the project provides a model for decarbonizing existing cement plants in the United States.
- National Cement Company of California, Inc. has also been awarded up to US$500 million. The Lebec Net Zero Cement Plant Project intends to achieve carbon-neutral cement production at its Lebec, California facility. By utilizing locally sourced biomass, such as pistachio shells, instead of fossil fuels, and replacing traditional clinker with calcined clay to produce limestone calcined clay cement, the project aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, the plant will capture and seize approximately 950,000 tons of CO2 each year, demonstrating an effective strategy for reducing carbon emissions in the cement industry.
US-based firm develops cement making method aimed at reducing carbon during production process
Fortera, a cement manufacturer based in California, has developed a new technology to capture CO2 emissions from the kilns used in cement production. This captured CO2 is converted into a solid material and then reused in the concrete-making process.- Initially, Fortera's method is expected to cut CO2 emissions by around 10%. The first batch of this lower-CO2 concrete will be made at a CalPortland plant in Redding, California, and is expected to be available in May 2024.
Firms are expanding low-carbon cement capacity through increased investment in the United States
Holcim US, in April 2024, announced an investment of US$20.5 million. This is part of its strategy to make cement abundantly available in the Midwest area for residential, commercial, and industrial developments.
