The German electric vehicle charging station market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 25.08% from an initial value of US$722.237 million in 2021 to US$3,458.729 million in 2028.

A charging station for EVs (electric vehicles) is a device that links an EV to a power source, allowing electric cars, neighborhood EVS, and plug-in hybrids to be charged. The demand for EV charging stations is growing in the country due to favorable government policies, increasing ownership of electric vehicles, and favorable development of charging infrastructure in the nation. Germany is a country that ranks high above when it comes to the number of charging station facilities in Europe. According to the National Control Centre for Charging Infrastructure of Germany, there were reported 60,400 charging stations in the country in May 2022. The National Control Centre for Charging Infrastructure was established in 2019 and looks after the installation of these charging infrastructures throughout the country. Further, according to this control center, Bayern, Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Baden-Wurttemberg were reported to be among the most highly concentrated states in Germany for electric vehicle charging infrastructures as of May 2022.

Further, favorable government initiatives regarding EV charging infrastructure are further predicted to bring about market growth. For instance, the Publicly Accessible Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in Germany program by the government has offered an amount of EUR 500 million in funding for the establishment of charging points with a capacity of 22kW and above from the summer of 2021 till the summer of 2022 and is expected to last till the end of 2025.

The Germany electric vehicle charging stations market is driven by increasing ownership of electric vehicles.

The increasing ownership of electric vehicles in the German region is expected to propel the demand for the establishment of more EV charging stations, and in turn, drive market growth. Germany aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045 and aims to cut emissions by roughly 65% by the year 2030 as compared to the levels in 1990. The regulations and initiatives to prevent the emission are thus expected to lead to increasing adoption of EVs.

Further, favorable government subsidies are expected to drive the adoption of EVs, thus driving the demand for charging stations further. For instance, in June 2020, Germany introduced a USD 146 billion fiscal recovery plan. With these funds, Germany offered a subsidy for electric vehicle purchases valued at USD 6,750 for the purchase of electric vehicles under USD 45,000. Further, a sum of USD 2.8 billion was also reserved for the development of EV charging infrastructure and the production of battery cells, in anticipation of the rising adoption of these vehicles. Major government backing is thus expected to substantially drive the market. Thus, developments like these in the German market by the government as well as market players with respect to EVs are expected to drive the demand for EV charging stations significantly.

Key Developments.

  • In April 2021 EnBW (Energy Baden-Wurttemberg AG), which is an electric utility company based out of Germany, announced that it would be establishing a 52-point fast charging station at the Kamener Kreus Autobahn Interchange, making it the largest public EV fast charging station in the European region. The firm was also reported to invest about EUR 100 million per year in order to develop 300 to 400 smaller charging stations as well in the region.
  • In July 2021, Volkswagen announced that it was planning to invest a sum of USD 86.3 billion from 2021 to 2025 for the development of EV production. Further, by the end of 2021, the company reported an overwhelming sale of 108,280 electric vehicles in Germany with a majority share of the sales held by BEVs.

Based on the type of electric vehicle, the German electric vehicle charging stations market is expected to witness positive growth in battery electric vehicles.

The electric vehicle charging station market in Germany is primarily driven by the extensive automobile sector in the country due to the presence of several key global automotive manufacturers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes. Furthermore, market growth is also being witnessed due to rising stringent government regulations for meeting sustainability goals. As a result of these laws and regulations, the total number of electric vehicles in the country has increased, with battery electric vehicles having a larger stock as compared to plug-in electric vehicles.
