Survey of Lawyers at Major Law Firms, Use of Podcasts

This study sheds light on the frequency at which lawyers make, agree to interview for or listen to podcasts on legal issues, broken down by various demographic variables. In addition, the study presents data on how important lawyers view podcasts as a marketing and brand building tool.

According to the data, among lawyers at major law firms, the plurality (37.90%) reported that they listen to podcasts on legal issues "more or less never". However, nearly 30% of lawyers sampled listen to podcasts on legal issues at least a few times per month and more than 16.5%, at least weekly. The frequency of podcast listening also varied significantly by predominant legal field, with lawyers in antitrust/competition law reporting the highest frequency of listening.

The data showed that 15.32% of the entire sample have been interviewed for someone else's legal issue podcast, while 84.68% have not. Respondents in intellectual property and tax had the highest percentage of those who have been interviewed, while no respondents in energy, international trade, and regulatory/healthcare had been interviewed for a legal podcast.

The data is based on a survey of 248 lawyers at major law firms across the United States. The survey was conducted in February and March 2023 and collected information on various aspects of lawyers' listening habits and the incidence of legal podcast interviews.  Data is broken out by size of law firm, legal practice area, work title, gender, prestige level of law school attended, and other variables.
