Spanish telecommunications giant Telefónica has maintained its position at the top of the thematic rankings in the publisher's telecom services sector scorecard. As in Q1 2023, the company is narrowly ahead of US vendors AT&T and Verizon.

Indeed, the make-up of the top 10 has remained unchanged over the last three months, with Telefónica, AT&T, and Verizon joined by Europe's Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and BT, SK Telecom and Softbank from Asia Pacific, T-Mobile US from North America, and Etisalat from the Middle East. The only change in the order has been SK Telecom jumping from 10th in Q1 to 7th in Q2.
According to our thematic scores, the activity of several telcos in the cybersecurity theme will be detrimental to their future performance. This is particularly damaging as cybersecurity is an important theme for the telecom services sector, with a weighting of 15% on the publisher's thematic screen. Three other themes have a weighting of 15%: 5G, digitalization, and cloud. Of the 58 companies in the telecom services sector scorecard, nine have scores of either 1 or 2 for the cybersecurity theme.
