Africa's power market is currently dominated by traditional fossil fuel sources, while hydropower plays an important role in many countries as well. While technologies such as carbon capture remain nascent, increasing activity relating to renewables, electric vehicles and hydrogen technologies is taking place across the region.
Energy transition in Africa is unique due to the lower levels of energy access and grid reliability in some countries. However, as the population and impact of climate change grow in tandem, energy and sustainability are set to be increasingly important issues.
On a capacity basis, gas makes up the biggest portion of Africa's fleet, followed by coal, hydropower, and oil. Onshore wind and solar PV are expected to make an increasing contribution by 2030, somewhat reducing reliance on coal.
Africa has low rates of individual vehicle ownership, and most passenger car sales consist of used, imported vehicles. Still, many countries have begun to incentivize the purchase of EVs, and multiple demonstration and commercial use cases have cropped up across the continent. Africa has also gained attention as a potential powerhouse for green hydrogen production due to abundant renewable resources and proximity to major markets.
