The growing pressure on governments to reduce industrial GHG emissions amid surging energy consumption, rising government support for hydrogen infrastructure development, demand from F&B, Pharma, Chemicals, and other end-user industries, and corporations' increased focus on sustainability and emission reductions due to government regulations and to build goodwill among consumers and shareholders are driving the global industrial hydrogen boilers market.

However, competition from conventional steam boilers and other alternatives such as electric boilers, as well as challenges associated with hydrogen, lack of mandates, and stringent policies and regulations, are some factors limiting the growth of industrial hydrogen boilers.

A hydrogen gas boiler uses hydrogen instead of natural gas (or methane) to generate heat. It works in the same way as natural gas boilers, by burning the gas, producing heat energy that can be used to produce steam or hot water.

Hydrogen is being considered a viable option for decarbonizing industrial processes. It can be used to power industrial boilers instead of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. When hydrogen is burned, it produces only water and heat, making it a clean energy source that emits no greenhouse gases.

In the current boiler market, only a small number of hydrogen boilers are being deployed in multiple industries by a handful of companies due to the immature hydrogen supply chain.

A hydrogen ready boiler is a boiler that is designed to be able to use fossil fuel (usually natural gas) with a hydrogen blend as a fuel source. This means that the boiler is equipped with the necessary components and systems to burn hydrogen gas, such as specialized burners and safety systems.

Hydrogen ready industrial boiler is considered ideal for present industrial use, as it would be feasible for the industries to gradually transition to 100% hydrogen when the cost and reliability issues regarding hydrogen are solved.

Global Industrial Boiler Scenario

Many industries require steam boilers operating around the clock to maintain regular function. Some of the major industries using steam boilers include oil refineries, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, food processing industries and other important industries which are significant to the economy.

Combustion of standard fossil fuels in industrial boilers results in the following nine emissions: carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, water, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter. Amid the rising demand to reduce emissions and the committed emission reduction targets by various countries, major economies are taking active steps to cut emissions from the boilers industry.

For instance, The European Commission started drafting new regulations for domestic boilers in 2018 and has since held consultations with experts on the matter. As part of the EU's new eco-design and energy labelling requirements for space and water heating systems, the European market could soon be required to operate with at least 20% hydrogen blend under new standards being envisaged at the European Union level.

The chances of extending these regulations to the industrial boilers cannot be negated as the region is taking rapid steps towards achieving the committed emission reduction targets. This might make way for the revamp of all the existing steam boilers into hydrogen-ready or hydrogen boilers which offer a major opportunity for the expansion of the hydrogen boilers market in the European Union.

According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) on reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, no new fossil fuel boilers should be sold anywhere in the world. The ban should start in 2025 unless they can be used with clean hydrogen.

Several countries have announced net zero emission plans to reduce their carbon emissions and potentially decrease their dependence on fossil fuels. In line with this, many nations have formulated hydrogen strategies to promote low carbon hydrogen use by developing hydrogen infrastructure, such as green hydrogen production facilities (production using renewable electricity), hydrogen refuelling station networks, etc. to meet future hydrogen demand.

Recent Developments

  • In December 2022, the UK government announced funding for nuclear and hydrogen technologies. It includes GBP 25 million for technologies that can make hydrogen from sustainable biomass and waste
  • In Dec 2022, Jericho Energy Ventures Inc. was awarded the Solar Impulse Foundations' 'Solar Impulse Efficient Solution' Label, for its zero-emission Dynamic Combustion Chamber hydrogen fueled boiler. The Label seeks to identify solutions that meet high standards in sustainability and profitability and demonstrates them to leading decision-makers hoping to expedite their development
  • Hydrogen Technologies Inc, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Jericho Energy Ventures Inc. announced in Sept 2022 that, its Dynamic Combustion Chamber (DCC) hydrogen boiler has been validated as operating with an overall GHG-free energy efficiency of nearly 100%. The DCC is the world's only hydrogen boiler with zero CO2 and zero Greenhouse Gas emissions
  • In March 2022, Vynova Group, a company that produces Chlor-alkali and PVC, installed a hydrogen-fired steam boiler system at its plant in Tessenderlo, Belgium. As part of Vynova's production processes, hydrogen is obtained as a by-product. That hydrogen will serve as fuel for the new steam boiler. Vynova will use the produced steam in its processes, for instance, to sterilize its products and for heating

Opportunities

Growing demand for multi-fuel fired boilers (including hydrogen-ready), rising interest in the Steam-as-a-Service (SaaS) business model, replacement of ageing/old boilers, and targeting markets with high growth potential - Germany, UK, Japan, and other countries that promote hydrogen usage and industry development - are some of the opportunities that boiler manufacturers can capitalize on.
