A hydrogen boiler is a gas-fired heating boiler capable of burning pure (100%) hydrogen. The majority of the hydrogen boilers in the market are hydrogen ready boilers. A hydrogen ready boiler on the other hand is capable of burning either natural gas or pure (100%) hydrogen or hydrogen blend. Hydrogen ready steam boilers are the key to converting the existing gas boilers from using natural gas (mostly methane) to hydrogen energy.

Carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, water, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter are all emitted when standard fossil fuels (natural gas and Oil) are burned in commercial and industrial boilers. The latter five combustion products are considered pollutants and are known to have harmful effects on humans and the environment, either directly or indirectly.

As industries and businesses are taking initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint to improve their ESG rating and to thrive in the market. The boiler market is no exception and is under plans to switch to sustainable fuels such as hydrogen. Though the hydrogen boiler technology is still in its developmental stage it has a huge potential to disrupt the conventional fossil gas-based boilers market.

Potential Drivers of the Global Hydrogen Boiler Market

Rising Government Support and Regulations for Hydrogen Infrastructure Development

Major economies in the world are keen on developing hydrogen economy and infrastructure in order to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and to achieve nationally determined emission reduction targets. In order to promote hydrogen technologies, governments are offering incentives and subsidies for the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies (hydrogen fuel cells), which can help to make these systems more financially attractive to consumers and businesses.

More than 40% of Europe's gas use comes from heating homes, which is more than industry and electric utilities.

Replacing gas-fired boilers is a key part of the UK's plan to have net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to combat climate change. Around a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions come from homes. In line with it, the UK government proposed banning the installation of conventional gas boilers in homes from 2026 and replacing them with hydrogen ready heating systems.

Under the plan, new boilers installed after a certain date would still use natural gas, but they would have to be able to switch to hydrogen, which does not release carbon dioxide when burned, in the future.

Some countries have already put a date on when new gas boilers can no longer be put in. Under its energy transition plans, Austria passed a law that bans gas and oil heating in new buildings and the sale of replacements for old buildings starting next year. This is two years earlier than what was originally planned.

In October 2021, the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility was launched by the European Commission. The USD 1.5 billion fund helps build zero-emissions infrastructure, like fast-charging stations and hydrogen refuelling stations. With the help of the fund, European countries aim to be closer to their goal of having one million charging stations by 2025 and 3.5 million by 2030.

In June 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) put out a Notice of Intent (NOI) to fund the USD 8 billion program in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to build regional clean hydrogen hubs (H2Hubs) across the country. H2Hubs will set up networks of hydrogen producers, consumers, and local connections to speed up the use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier.

The DOE's plan to reach President Biden's goals of a 100% clean electrical grid by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 considers the production, processing, delivery, storage, and final use of clean hydrogen (green and blue hydrogen) crucial. It also includes industrial uses of hydrogen fuel.

Some of the other drivers include increasing demand for space heating and water heating in residential and commercial sectors, growing pressure on governments to reduce industrial GHG emissions amid surging energy consumption, demand from F&B, Pharma, Chemicals, and other end-user industries, and corporations' increased focus on sustainability and emission reductions due to government regulations and to build goodwill among consumers and shareholders.

Domestic boilers had reached the installations of 150 million around the world. So, with the advent of hydrogen boiler technology and regulations, there is enormous replacement demand for hydrogen gas boilers.

In the UK, the government and energy experts within the UK are best assessing how to heat existing homes while lowering carbon emissions from natural gas boilers, and heat pumps, where hydrogen boilers could have a key role to play.

Currently, around 85% of UK homes are heated with polluting natural gas, and experts consider hydrogen technology to have a key role in helping the UK reach net zero by 2050. This is because the main by-product of burning hydrogen gas is water.

A hydrogen ready boiler would work in a similar way to existing gas boilers. The key difference is that it could heat the home with natural gas and pure hydrogen.

Hydrogen boilers would be installed the same way as gas boilers and look very similar. They would be connected to the gas network, with fuel being delivered to the unit when heating and hot water are needed.

Hydrogen Boiler Market Opportunities

  • Growing demand for multi-fuel fired steam boilers (including hydrogen-ready) and replacement of oil and ageing boilers in the industries with sustainable and low emission boiler technologies offer a great opportunity for the industrial hydrogen boilers market players
  • Rising interest in the Steam-as-a-Service (SaaS) business model
  • The EU plans to phase out fossil fuel boilers in the residential sector, offer a great opportunity for the domestic boiler market to expand in the future
  • Targeting markets with high growth potential - Germany, Japan, and other countries that promote hydrogen usage and industry development - are some of the opportunities that boiler manufacturers can capitalize on

Hydrogen Boiler Market Challenges

  • To produce hydrogen on a large scale in a cost-effective manner by using electrolyzers
  • Hydrogen can also react with some metals and can even damage certain pipeworks
The basic technology of hydrogen production is relatively straightforward. The larger challenge surrounds the logistics of hydrogen supply, as pipeline infrastructure will need to be converted, and more efficient methods of transporting hydrogen will need to be developed.

Hydrogen Boiler Market Restraints

  • Competition from conventional, electric boilers and alternate technologies market such as heat pumps.
  • Hydrogen heating can be costly, especially green hydrogen which can limit its use by the masses unless its cost becomes on par with fossil fuel boilers
  • Immature hydrogen supply chain.

Some of the Recent Developments

  • In Jan 2023, HYFLEXPOWER consortium successfully demonstrated power generation from a 30/70 hydrogen to natural gas blend in France's Smurfit Kappa Saillat Paper Mill
  • The government has also invested GBP 25 million into the Hy4Heat program, a pilot scheme in Scotland to heat 300 homes with 100% hydrogen via the existing gas grid due to take place in 2023
  • Targets to ensure all new heating systems installed in UK homes by 2035 use low-carbon technologies, such as electric heat pumps, or support new technologies like hydrogen boilers
  • Hydrogen Technologies lnc, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Jericho Energy Ventures Inc. announced in Sept 2022 that, its Dynamic Combustion Chamber (DCC) hydrogen boiler has been validated as operating with an overall GHG-free energy efficiency of nearly 100%. The DCC is the world's only hydrogen boiler with zero C02 and zero Greenhouse Gas emissions
  • In March 2022, Vynova Group, a company that produces Chlor-alkali and PVC, installed a hydrogen-fired steam boiler system at its plant in Tessenderlo, Belgium. As part of Vynova's production processes, hydrogen is obtained as a by-product. That hydrogen will serve as fuel for the new steam boiler. Vynova will use the produced steam in its processes, for instance, to sterilize its products and for heating
