A Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Incubator, also known as a gassed Incubator, forms a crucial component of laboratories that is utilized for the growth and development of cells, tissues or microorganisms by maintaining optimal conditions that are clones of human bodies. These comprise control of temperature, humidity, pH, oxygen level and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration regulation, all of which are essential for maximizing cell growth. The process of cell growth is confronted with the problem of simulating an in vivo environment, which can be achieved by using CO2 Incubators that make the system effective by maintaining consistent ambient conditions. This type of Incubator enables in creating a natural environment as close as possible for the development of cell and tissue cultures. This is called the in vitro method of producing living organisms and forms the most major application of CO2 Incubators.
The environment of the cells and their health when placed in Incubators for culturing can become negatively impacted by variations in temperature, humidity and pH, as also by the repeated opening and closing of the device's door. Overcoming this can be achieved by ensuring that optimal conditions are always maintained in the Incubator, which include the required temperature range, pH & humidity levels and CO2 concentration based on the type of cells being cultured. As a rule, the temperatures can vary from 4-50oC, pH levels from 0-14, relative humidity between 40-95% and CO2 concentration between 0.3 and 19.9%.
As already mentioned above, CO2 Incubators, similar to their general counterparts, possess shelves covered in plastic liners or overlays into which the samples can be placed during processing. In addition to protecting the samples, these liners have cavities for allowing the even passage of air under or around each sample. Since non-corrosive stainless steel is normally used to fabricate the Incubator's body, it remains shielded from the damaging effects of moisture and other contaminants, which can have an effect on sample quality. Some CO2 Incubators are also equipped with the facility of auto cleaning using UV or heat lamps for sanitation.
