This study looks at how 31 college and university tutoring programs are using artificial intelligence applications in their student tutoring efforts, focusing especially on the use of ChatGPT, Bard, Llama and AI-enabled Bing. Survey respondents discuss and evaluate the extent to which their college administration support AI efforts in tutoring, and how the tutoring programs themselves expect to use AI in the future. The study presents specific data sets for use of particular AI applications, and for use of AI in particular types of subject tutoring, including specific data sets for writing, mathematics, social sciences, hard sciences and many other subject areas. It also looks at the current and expected impact of AI on use of human tutors, peer tutors, and on tutor training.
Just a few of this 104-page report’s many findings are that:
- Only 9.68% of respondents were routinely using AI-enabled Bing in their tutoring work. All use was by tutoring programs at research or doctoral level universities.
- 80% of respondents from community colleges felt that the impact of artificial intelligence on college tutoring programs had been understated in the profession and its impact would be greater than anticipated.
- Only 3.23% of respondents were developing tailored AI tutoring products in conjunction with Offices of Assessment, Institutional Effectiveness or Research Office.
- 29.03% of programs sampled were using Grammarly. Use was relatively common across the board but was highest among community colleges and low tuition colleges.
Data in the report is broken out by college type/Carnegie class, enrollment size, tuition level, and public/private status. Open ended questions are broken out by college type.
