Telecom Services Sector Scorecard, Q3 2023 Update - Thematic Intelligence

Very little has changed since the previous quarter on the thematic screen of the analyst's telecom services sector scorecard. Telefónica still leads the way ahead of US giants AT&T and Verizon. Indeed, the top 10 companies in the thematic ranking for Q3 2023 are exactly the same as in Q2. Telefónica, AT&T, and Verizon are joined by Europe's Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and BT, SK Telecom and Softbank from Asia Pacific, T-Mobile US from North America, and Etisalat from the Middle East.

According to our thematic scores, the activity of several telcos in the cybersecurity theme will be detrimental to their future performance. This is particularly damaging as cybersecurity is an important theme for the telecom services sector, with a weighting of 15% on the analyst's thematic screen. Three other themes have a weighting of 15%: 5G, digitalization, and cloud. Of the 58 companies in the telecom services sector scorecard, nine have thematic scores of either 1 or 2 out of 5 for the cybersecurity theme, suggesting that their activity in this theme will be detrimental to their future performance.
