Mastering RAT-STATS may be challenging without sufficient knowledge; gain confidence and understanding for effective usage.

RAT-STATS is a free software package developed and implemented by the Office of the Inspector General to help design, select, and extrapolate statistically valid random samples. The OIG primarily relies on the RAT-STATS software when performing audits of providers. Given the OIG’s use of this software when performing audits of providers, it is important for providers, payers, and compliance professionals to have a good understanding of the RAT-STATS software. Unfortunately, the OIG has released a pair of lengthy documents that do little to explain the software in a digestible manner. This presentation will explain how to use and understand the RAT-STATS software in a user-friendly manner. The presentation explains the software’s purpose, capabilities, and shortcomings. The presentation will also explain some key points to consider when scrutinizing and rebutting poorly performed opposing analysis.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to understand key considerations in interpreting sample size results for informed decision-making.
  • You will be able to develop the ability to interpret and critically assess key factors influencing the extrapolation process.
  • You will be able to apply theoretical knowledge through practical exercises using RAT-STATS.
  • You will be able to develop a critical mindset for evaluating the reliability and replicability of results.
