The India aseptic packaging market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.48% during the forecast period and is set to reach a market size of US$3.223 billion in 2028 from an initial value of US$1.506 billion in 2021.

Aseptic packaging involves packaging a product at ultra-high temperature (UHT), separately sterilizing or sanitizing the packaging, and then sealing it under sterile atmospheric conditions to prevent viral and bacterial contamination. This method preserves the quality of the packaged contents and eliminates the need for preservatives. India aseptic packaging industry is highly competitive, with several major players leading the industry. Key players include Amcor Ltd, and Tetra Pak International SA, among others.

Booming end-user growth

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, maintaining cleanliness and minimizing contamination risks is of utmost importance. Aseptic packaging is a prevalent practice that aims to reduce the chances of introducing bacteria and contaminants into the patient's body during medication administration. The pharmaceutical industry in India has witnessed significant growth, owing to the rising medicinal demand which has led to increased production output and overall turnover. In the fiscal year 2021-22, the total annual turnover of the pharmaceutical sector reached Rs. 3,44,125 crores, mirroring the robust expansion of this industry. This growth trend was consistent with the previous fiscal year, 2020-21, where the total annual turnover also stood at Rs. 3,28,054 crores (USD 42.34 billion). These figures underscore the resilience and consistent performance of the pharmaceutical sector in India.

Moreover, besides the pharmaceutical sector, the food & beverage sector is also one of the major end-users of aseptic packaging, and with the growing population density in India the demand for food items has witnessed a significant increase which is also expected to pave the way for the future India aseptic packaging market growth in such sector.

Increasing use in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector

The growth of pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging in India aseptic packaging market has been influenced by several factors, making it a significant segment within the broader packaging industry such as the rising healthcare expenditure followed by regulatory compliance, According to IBEF, India's healthcare expenditure has been steadily increasing due to the growing population, rising income levels, and increased awareness about healthcare. The Indian healthcare sector is expected to record a three-file rise with a growing CAGR of 22%. As a result, there is a greater demand for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, which in turn drives the need for specialized packaging solutions to ensure the safety and efficacy of these products. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, as per the Economic Survey 2022-23, India’s public expenditure on healthcare touched 2.1 % of GDP in FY23 and 2.2% in FY22, against 1.6% in FY21.

Stringent regulations and quality standards imposed by regulatory authorities

In terms of regulatory compliance, stringent regulations and quality standards were imposed by the regulatory authorities, such as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requiring pharmaceutical and healthcare products to be packaged in aseptic and tamper-evident packaging to maintain product integrity and safety. This has led to the adoption of advanced packaging solutions. In January 2019, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) introduced fresh guidelines for food packaging. These new regulations, known as the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, serve as a replacement for the packaging provisions found in the previous Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. Concurrently, separate regulations concerning labelling were also issued. These newly introduced regulations encompass a comprehensive set of requirements that pertain to packaging materials. Additionally, the regulations stipulate that food packaging materials are now obliged to conform to Indian Standards (IS) as outlined in Schedules I, II, and III. These schedules specifically pertain to paper and paperboard materials, metal and metal alloys, and plastic materials, respectively.
