Firefighting foam is a fire suppression substance used to prevent oxygen from reaching the combustion of the substance. The foam solution is made from the water and foam concentrate mixing in the right ratio. Foam concentrate is manufactured, which, when mixed with water at the right proportion, becomes a foam solution. There are several types of firefighting foam offered in the market, such as Aqueous film-forming foam concentrate (AFFF). Aqueous film-forming foam concentrate (AFFF) is available in the 1%, 3%, or 6% type concentrate. They are manufactured from material types such as hydrocarbon surfactants, solvents, fluorochemical surfactants, small amounts of salts, and foam stabilizers. They are used in the premix state and are suitable for use with dry chemical extinguishing agents.

According to European directives, bio-foam fire extinguishers are dispensed with perfluorinated surfactants for more sustainability.

According to the World Bank report, by 2050, nearly 7 out of 10 people will live in cities.   • In July 2023, Tyco Fire Protection Products of Johnson Control announced that they would discontinue the production and sale of fluorinated firefighting foams, including Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) and related products, by June 2024.   • In February 2024, Perimeter Solutions announced that its SOLBERG® 3% MIL-SPEC Synthetic Fluorine-Free Foam was the first fluorine-free firefighting foam concentrate to be GreenScreen Certified® by Clean Production Action (CPA) and listed on the Department of Defense Qualified Products List (QPL). It met the quality standard of the substance that was confirmed to be fluorine-free with no intentionally added per- or poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAs).   • In May 2023, The research team at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, was looking to enhance the firefighting capabilities of commercially available PFAS-free fire suppressants for military use. Department of Defense (DoD) task force identified more than 700 active military locations where PFAS had been leaked into soil or groundwater, and it is actively cleaning up and looking for AFFF alternatives.
