Key Highlights

  • Contactless payments are gaining prominence in Serbia, with major banks and scheme providers now offering contactless cards. In October 2023, domestic payment scheme DinaCard announced the launch of contactless payment technology for its cards. Starting from March 31, 2024, all banks within the DinaCard network enabled acceptance of contactless DinaCard cards; from June 1, 2024, all issuing banks will start issuing contactless DinaCard cards. Payments of up to RSD6,000 ($55.35) using DinaCard contactless cards will not require a PIN, while for larger amounts users will need to enter their PIN at the POS terminal.
  • The Serbian banking and payment card space is witnessing consolidation. In April 2024, Alta Pay Group (a Serbian financial services company and the parent of Alta Banka) acquired a 30% stake in Addiko Bank, an Austrian banking group with operations in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia. Previously, Montenegro’s Adriatic Bank acquired Serbia's Expobank in April 2023 to expand its presence in Serbia. Both Addiko Bank and Expobank offer a wide range of debit and credit cards.
  • The government and private banks run financial inclusion initiatives to bring unbanked and underbanked individuals under the purview of the formal banking system. In April 2024, UniCredit Bank announced that it is upgrading all its debit cards to Mastercard Touch Card, which includes accessibility features for the blind and partially sighted. In November 2023, the government introduced a free electronic payment card for students in Serbia. The card offers discounts and other benefits for train tickets, Air Serbia flights, bookstores, libraries, cultural institutions, and restaurants.
