The thermoplastic polyolefin membrane market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.82% during the forecast period.

The major factor driving the thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane market’s growth is increasing demand from the residential segment. Contributing factors for the increased number of residential segments are urbanization, rapid industrial expansion, government infrastructure projects, and demand for affordable housing in developing and developed countries. Further, the growth of commercial buildings in developing economies is also important in the demand for Thermoplastic polyolefin membranes.

  • In June 2024, the Federal government of Canada launched a US$1.5 billion new program for the Co-operative House. The scheme would build thousands of new co-op homes by 2028. This project will provide affordable homes for those most in need, and it will increase the number of homes in Canada.
  • In July 2024, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced building permits for 14,46,000.
  • According to the data from Germany, the construction of 24,500 dwellings was permitted in Germany, with a total turnover of €344,9 bn. The estimated building costs of residential and non-residential buildings in the country were about 112 billion EUR in 2023.
  • At the end of 2022, there were around 43.4 million apartments in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this was 0.7% or 282,800 apartments more than at the end of 2021. There are 22.0 million apartments in 3.3 million apartment buildings across Germany.

THERMOPLASTIC POLYOLEFIN MEMBRANE MARKET DRIVERS:

Increasing demand from the residential sector

The growth in the construction industry is owing to the growing global urbanization and growing economic development in different parts of the world. A significant part of the development of construction goes to building houses, parks, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, schools, etc., for the population. According to the World Economic Forum, the share of the urban population of the total population is 55% in 2022 and likely to be 80% by 2080. This would significantly cause the rise of material consumption in every sector, including the expanding construction and development industry.

Construction is also needed for the development of megacities worldwide. TPO  membranes are used in both commercial and residential roofing. It mostly comes in a white membrane, which reflects heat instead of absorbing it. This quality of the material helps to keep the building cool and saves energy.

Rising demand in the automotive and other industries

TPO is used in automotive manufacturing. It is used in the exterior body panels, interior trim components, and other parts of the automobile. It has excellent impact resistance, elevated temperature tolerance, and lightweight nature. The demand in the automobile sector will grow along with the demand for TPO, which will increase with the growing demand for electric vehicles worldwide. The significant percentage share of electric vehicles has been increasing yearly compared to the overall vehicle sales.

TPO membrane is also used in packaging applications. It is used for films, containers, and closure features due to its toughness, flexibility, and moisture resistance. TPO is applied in many consumer goods. It resists acids/alkalis, cleaning agents, oils, and solvents, making it durable for prolonged exposure.

Growing use of solar panel applications

The last decade has seen a rise in solar energy growth, and it is likely to grow at a very significant rate in the coming years. Solar PV generation increased by 270?TWh in 2022, reaching almost 1?300?TWh. According to the IEA (International Energy Agency), Solar PV power capacity is likely to reach 6,044 GW in 2030. The International Solar Alliance has been formed across 86?members to provide a platform to promote solar energy. This development shows the likelihood of increased demand for solar panel rooftops worldwide.

However, with the increased number of solar panel rooftops, a particular variety of TPO roofing membranes is also needed that is compatible with all types of PV installations; one such product is offered by Holcim Elevate's EPDM and TPO roofing membranes for mechanical resistance, durability, and high and low-temperature resistance. Various developments are taking place to develop solar roofing membranes used in buildings.

THERMOPLASTIC POLYOLEFIN MEMBRANE MARKET GEOGRAPHICAL OUTLOOK

The Asia Pacific region will dominate the thermoplastic polyolefin membrane market during the forecast period.

The Asia-Pacific region is dominated by major economies like China, Japan, India, and South Korea. Some of the fastest-growing emerging economies, such as ASEAN countries, are from this region.

After the real estate turmoil of 2021, China remains the largest market for the growth and development of real estate. With the rise of many steel-structure industrial plants and public buildings in China, there has been a need for thermoplastic polyolefin waterproof membranes for application. The new opportunity lies in policy decisions such as new urban buildings being certified green by 2022. This includes public facilities such as schools, hospitals, museums, stadiums, affordable housing, and any building over 20,000 square meters.

Further, in India, 114.4 Lakhs have houses grounded up to date under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme. Under the PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) for housing, 118.64 Lakhs houses are sanctioned for development. 85.04 Lakhs houses have been completed to date. The government has sanctioned ? 2 Lakh Cr. for assistance. About ? 8.07 Lakh Cr. total investment is already committed.

Thermoplastic polyolefin membrane market restraints:

  • Thermoplastic polyolefin membrane has certain limitations, as it may not perform well in low-temperature conditions. It can become brittle at low temperatures. It may break down and fail under exposure to strong acid or alkali environments. TPO membrane comes under limited color options.

Thermoplastic polyolefin membrane market key developments:

  • In October 2023, BASF and Oriental Yuhong, a leading Thermoplastic Polyolefin roofing membrane producer in China, teamed to develop solar roofing membranes used in buildings. With the growing solar PV installations in China. The quality of TPO roofing membranes, including their waterproofing performance, has become critical. BASF-optimized light stabilizer formulations, Tinuvin® and Chimassorb®. This protects TPO membranes from degradation and discoloration while providing weathering resistance and long-term strength, increasing the lifetime of roofing membranes.
  • In March 2023, Kraus Maffei’s TPO waterproof membranes production line was successfully commissioned at Skshu Paint’s Anhui Mingguang factory. This would be used for the production of P-type (polyester fiber internally reinforced), H-type (homogeneous), and HL-type (backing non-woven fabric type) TPO waterproof membranes. It can achieve a capacity of 17 million ?/year.  With the rise of many steel-structure industrial plants and public buildings in China, the demand for thermoplastic polyolefin waterproof membranes will likely increase in the upcoming years.
  • In March 2023,  IKO, a major player in the roofing, waterproofing, and insulation industry for residential and commercial markets, introduced two new commercial product lines. It has AquaBarrier BSW blindside waterproofing for horizontal and vertical installations and re-launched the HyKote SEBS roof coatings and mastics line at the 2023 International Roofing Expo.
