This study analyzes US e-commerce ready packaging trends. E-commerce ready packaging is defined as having two components:

  • Ships in Own Container (SIOC)
  • New product development designed to improve existing product packaging to optimize it for direct-to-consumer shipping
E-commerce ready (ECR) packaging is different from e-commerce packaging, although the two have some overlap. Top level data for e-commerce packaging (which includes boxes, mailers and protective packaging for shipping) is provided in this report as background information and a point of reference.

In this study, packaging is only counted when used in business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce sales, that is, transactions between businesses and consumers using devices that access the internet, such as:

  • desktop computers
  • laptops
  • tablets
  • smartphones
  • smart wearables

Excluded from the scope of this study are:

  • consumer-to-consumer transactions (e.g., a private individual selling used items through an online marketplace)
  • business-to-business transactions (e.g., a business purchasing office furniture online)
  • online sales of cars and other motor vehicles
  • online transactions involving houses and real estate
  • returned items
This industry study analyzes the e-commerce ready packaging industry and presents historical demand data for e-commerce packaging and e-commerce merchandise sales (2013, 2018, and 2023) and forecasts (2028 and 2033) by product type (boxes & mailers, protective packaging, and other) and market (computers, electronics & appliances; apparel & accessories; home furnishings; food & beverages; toys, games & sporting goods; health & beauty; and other).
