After two consecutive quarters with no changes at the top of the thematic screen of the analyst’s telecom services sector scorecard, a minor tweak in the theme weightings has resulted in movement. The weighting for the artificial intelligence (AI) theme has increased to 15% from 10%, while the weighting for the cloud theme has been reduced to 10% from 15%. As a result, Verizon has leapfrogged SK Telecom into third place on the thematic screen. While both have scores of 4 out of 5 for the AI theme, Verizon’s lower cloud score (3 out of 5, compared to SK’s 4 out of 5) had kept it in fourth place before the weighting change. Verizon also scores better than SK on the digitalization theme, which has a weighting of 15%.
Ahead of Verizon and SK, Telefónica maintains its position as thematic leader, with Orange in second place. AT&T has improved by one place to seventh in Q3 2024, while Saudi Telecom has dropped out of the top 10. Rakuten has taken its place, moving from 13th place last quarter to 10th thanks to scores of 4 in key themes like AI, digitalization, and cybersecurity. Rakuten sits just behind its Japanese counterpart, NTT, in the top 10, while E& is the only Middle Eastern company in that group following Saudi Telecom’s fall.
