Key Highlights

  • Poland is one of the most-advanced contactless payment markets in the world, with the majority of consumers embracing this payment method. To capitalize, in June 2024, Mastercard introduced a biometric payment solution called Pay with Your Glance, in collaboration with Empik and PayEye. This initiative allows consumers to use facial recognition for payments, integrating biometric data into existing payment systems. The payment process involves users registering their facial biometrics through an app connected to their bank or a participating merchant. While making a purchase, the user needs to look at a camera-equipped terminal and the system verifies their identity; completing the transaction without needing a physical card or device.
  • The market is driven by the domestic brand BLIK, which allows users to make both in-store and online payments. In H1 2024, BLIK made over 1.1 billion transactions (including e-commerce, POS, ATM, and P2P) with an increase of 40% compared to the same period in the previous year. At the end of June 2024, there were 30.3 million mobile apps registered in the BLIK payment system.
  • Buy now pay later (BNPL) services are gradually gaining prominence in Poland as an alternative credit option, mostly driven by tech-savvy millennials. Credit offered by a bank is the preferred BNPL option for in-store purchases. To capitalize on the growing popularity of BNPL, in May 2024, PKO Pay Later (the BNPL platform of PKO Bank Polski) increased its BNPL limit to consumers from PLN1,000 ($238.04) to PLN2,000 ($476.07); enabling customers to repay for their purchases within 30 days. Since its inception, nearly 226,000 banks consumers made BNPL purchases worth PLN494 million ($117.6 million).
