Following significant government support, 80% of secondary schools are now academies, with maintained schools increasingly converting. Both types remain under strict government guidelines, but academies can decide term dates, curriculums, subject choices and budget decisions. Despite several years of economic turmoil, government funding has remained strong because of the importance of maintaining and improving UK education standards.
The industry covers education at the secondary level. Secondary schools typically include the years seven to 11 and may also include years 12 and 13, which are commonly known as sixth form. All-through schools, which combine primary and secondary education, are also included. The majority of secondary schools, such as grammar schools, non-selective comprehensive schools and academies, are state funded, but the industry also includes privately funded independent schools.
